To build their magnificent sand castles, colonies of African termites chew up and regurgitate dirt. Their labors result in large, complex mounds that rise upward from the ground.

Man does something similar. But mankind's chewed up and regurgitated dirt, or cement, tends to spread out and cover wider and wider areas ... eventually hiding most or all of the ground.
